Small with outstanding colours and perfectly formed, but under threat: Royal Mail highlights the plight of ten scarce and threatened UK insects which are struggling for survival in a changing world. Beetling their way to issue on 15 April in a set of ten 1st Class stamps, Insects is the second in Royal Mail’s ‘Action for Species’ series, which highlights UK endangered species that are benefitting from action plans to conserve them. The stamp images were photographed at the Natural History Museum from its own collection of 28 million insect specimens. Royal Mail consulted with the museum and experts on the selection of rare insects, many of which are on the danger list due to issues like habitat loss. The ‘Action for Species’ series began in September 2007 with Birds, and in 2009 it moves from fauna to flora for the third issue in the series which explores the UK’s rare plants. Julietta Edgar, Head of Special Stamps, Royal Mail, said: “The insect stamps are absolutely spectacular; most people jump a mile when you talk about insects! The latest set of 10 stamps demonstrates perfectly how important and amazing each insect is, and also how beautiful and delicate they really are.” Charlotte Smith, presenter of Countryfile, said: “I love the idea that people will, for a second, wonder what on earth is sitting on their post... before they realise that the insect is just on the stamp. It’s a great way of drawing attention to these small creatures which need our help.” We have 50 sets to give away - just click below to enter!
