The Competition
Open to both amateurs and professionals of all ages and nationalities, the competition last year attracted over 18,500 entries from more than 50 countries, including Poland, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, Finland and Brazil.
Its origins go back as far as 1964, when there were just three categories and about 600 entries. In 1984, BBC Wildlife Magazine and the Natural History Museum joined forces to create the competition as it is today with more than 20,500 entries.
Exhibitions tour throughout the year, not only in the UK but also worldwide, from the US, the Caribbean and South Africa, Europe, to Asia and Australia.
The competition is launched each year in the February issue of BBC Wildlife Magazine, and the finale is the opening of the exhibition of the winning and commended entries at the Natural History Museum. The judges look for aesthetic appeal above all, put place and emphasis on photographs taken in natural conditions.
The aims of the competition are:
To raise the status of wildlife photography
To show case the best images of nature worldwide
To inspire a new generation of photographic artists to produce visionary and expressive interpretations of nature
To use its photographs to encourage people to appreciate the splendid variety of life on Earth and so care about the future.
